Macross Zero

‘Macross Zero’ takes off with the franchise’s standard themes, and even adds in some environmentally-minded spiritualism, but it struggles to stick the landing.

Name(s): Macross Zero / マクロス ゼロ
Format: Original video animation [OVA] (5 episodes)
Studio(s): Satelight

Macross Zero is a well-put together anime with great animation, voice acting, the works—but some of the themes, namely the “modern society corrupts peaceful tribe attuned to nature” are tired and grating, and the same also goes for many aspects of female lead Sara’s personality. Stunning combat sequences and a welcome return from fan-favorite Roy Fokker, but I would never put this among my favorite Macross series. Thematically speaking, it’s hard to not see this as a lesser Princess Mononoke.
