Satoshi Kon directs Paprika, a beautifully kaleidoscopic journey through the dreamworlds and wishes of its characters.

Name(s): Paprika / パプリカ
Format: Movie (90 minutes)
Studio(s): Madhouse

One of the best-animated movies I’ve ever seen. The real joy of Paprika comes from the dream sequences. Unlike most movies which portray dreams as mirrors of reality, here they’re surreal and nonsensical, a kaleidoscope that’s constantly shifting and morphing. It’s a real trip to see that sensation right in front of you. I also liked the characters, and applaud the atypical relationships. However, it feels like something is missing, perhaps some sort of deeper meaning or philosophy to its barely-explored themes regarding dreams as escapist fantasies.
