While I would normally consider myself a fan of Satoshi Kon, ‘Perfect Blue’ moves way too fast for its own good, and is too easily discernible despite seeking panicked thrills through its obfuscated plot.

While I would normally consider myself a fan of Satoshi Kon, Perfect Blue moves way too fast for its own good, and is too easily discernible despite seeking panicked thrills through its obfuscated plot. I found most of the revelations to be obvious, and some seem to come out of nowhere for shock value.

Frankly, I also thought the main character was stupid and annoying. Some cheap animation quality and ugly faces here and there, though the latter can provide an “uncanny” vibe that assists the atmosphere. I would still recommend watching this, as finding competent horror anime is like hunting cryptids, but I like the story’s concepts more than their execution. I plan to give this another try someday.
