To save others from the same frustrating internet searches as me, here’s documentation of a game-breaking bug I found in ‘Survival Kids 2.’

Name(s): Survival Kids 2: Escape the Twin Islands!! / Survival Kids 2: Dasshutsu!! Futago Shima!

I certainly didn’t expect to write an article about something like this, but for posterity, I’m enshrining what happened to me to save a future soul madness (but likely not any heartache).

After spending hours trying to find out how to progress the best ending of Survival Kids 2, I finally gave in and looked the process up. Apparently, I needed an item called Gramp’s Map. I’ve also seen it called the Grandfather Clock Map or Grandpa’s Map.

I was quickly reminded of why I personally write guides: seemingly no one on planet Earth thought it was necessary to explain where Gramp’s Map was. Everyone was fine with stating its necessity, but that’s it. Gramp’s Map is found in the middle of the left island on part of Outlook Mountain. It’s the tile with Arid Dunes directly to the south, and Waterfall River directly to the left. Walk along the south part of the screen, and you should trigger a cutscene where your Pack is knocked down a cliff. Pi the bird can be ordered to grab it for you, and next to it is a case that can also be grabbed containing Gramp’s Map.

Well, there was no case for me. It had been a while since I last played the game, so in all likelihood, I went through this event already. After scanning my inventory and storage for the hundredth time, I had to come to an unfortunate conclusion.

I noticed some time ago that a glitched item appeared in my storage named “Object—-▼”. I didn’t know what to make of it, and kept it in my storage as a weird artifact. I assumed some item turned into it, but considering the dozens I had in storage, I couldn’t recognize what it was.

I’m sure you know where this is going.

Gramp’s Map isn’t an item that can be discarded or destroyed. Some unknown action at some point in time turned my stored Gramp’s Map into a glitched item. There is no other possible explanation. With no other options, I tried discarding the glitched item to see if the Gramp’s Map respawned on the field. It didn’t. I also tried combining it with the other two Map items I had; no luck there, either. I was softlocked out of the true ending of Survival Kids 2.

I wish I had a solution, but I couldn’t find one. If I was more knowledgeable, I might be able to cheat the item back into my inventory, but that’s beyond me. The best thing I could think of doing was creating this page so that someone else frantically googling “Gramp’s Map” would be able to find my explanation and possibly realize what happened to their file. Could save them some time troubleshooting, at least.

If you know what causes this glitch or how to fix it, please share. I’ve seen people discuss many text-related bugs in Survival Kids 2, but none like this. All I can say is to check your inventory and storage before every save to make sure nothing has glitched.

For the record, I was playing a ROM patched with an English fan-translation on my New 3DS XL with the MGBA emulator. Super Game Boy enhancements were enabled. That’s all I got for ya. My method of playing could have caused the glitch, but it might not have, too.

Take care—it’s a jungle out there.
