Hey, Chainsaw Man is pretty good. It’s nice to see a shonen series just go in, tell a story, and fuck off (well, that part is a bit ambiguous). Unfortunately, Chainsaw Man doesn’t end up feeling like it left after hitting its full potential. By the end, I actually kind of felt like the author was selling himself short and in a rush to finish the story.
Anyway, while the art is fairly rough at points and has a sketch-like quality, there isn’t a constant disparity between well-drawn panels and lackluster panels, so it wears the amateurishness as a style. The rawness of the artwork even assists the violence at points, with gore that’s displayed soberly rather than exploitatively relished on.
Conceptually, this feels like a hodge-podge of shonen tropes. Which is fine, but it got distracting for me at times how obvious the genecology felt at points. What ends up being another one of Chainsaw Man‘s flaws is that it ends up not explaining much of its world’s mechanics, which would be what ended up differentiating them from contemporaries.
…I went to the bathroom in the middle of writing this and lost my momentum. Hopefully, I’ll finish this some day.
