Name(s): Céline and Julie Go Boating / Celine and Julie Go Boating
Céline and Julie Go Boating explores the barrier of audience perception and participation through a surrealist narrative. However, a narrative is only a frame. It’s reliant on content to emphasize its value and vice-versa. The two leads laugh hysterically as if they’re in on a joke only they understand, and the audience isn’t given an invitation to join them on the ride. Due to this smug obfuscation, the theme to take away from the film is the opposite of what it likely aims for: some art is too distant to attempt to make your own.
