A lot of people depicted in Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade are naturally “underwhelming” in their modern life achievements, but it’s more than a bit repulsive how the filmmakers aim to highlight these people as losers and objects to be mocked. What could otherwise be a cultural document of an ignored piece of history comes too close to being a freak show by its own intention. There’s a scene in this movie where a teenage Billy Mitchell is gassing his skills up while the film slowly zooms in on his acne. Got ’em! Nerrrrrds! If you showed Chasing Ghosts to the average person, they’d come away with less respect for gaming and its players, much like what’s lacking from its filmmakers.
