Wes Craven’s 1996 seminal satirical slasher stunningly surpasses swathes of shallow, shlocky ‘Scream’ siblings.

The funniest thing about this light parody/satire is that Scream is maybe the best slasher classic ever. It lampoons genre tropes while perhaps unintentionally succeeding them in their original intent. It’s consistently humorous both referentially and in regards to its characters, and this success at the non-horror scenes raises suspicion and tension as we actually get to know and enjoy these teenagers before their inevitable slaughter. It’s cliché, but filled with so much misdirection it works.
