Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1972 sci-fi epic ‘Solaris’ explores the distinctions between reality and fantasy—and if any of them are even meaningful.

Inexcusably slow pacing and seemingly irrelevant scenes hold 1972‘s Solaris back. Dialogue consists too much of philosophical ramblings, feeling like it came from textbook rather than humans. Donatas Banionis‘s performance is emotionless in a story that, at its core, is anything but. A third of Solaris takes place in one room as people watch TV, making it obvious this was meant to be a book. Tarkovsky doesn’t convince otherwise.
