Excellent ’90s alternative rock that retains a fair amount of the noise from the first album, which was heavily inspired by the early ’90s shoegazing scene. On the A Brief History of Amazing Letdowns EP, Lilys breaks away from that a little with a more aggressive sound that still sounds very melodic.
Lilys went from Loveless-worshipping shoegaze wannabes to inductees at the class of Pavement, and they took an extracurricular course in Guided by Voices on how to rock just a bit more in their songs. And boy, does it pay off.
At 22 minutes, this is definitely worth checking out for any lo-fi noise pop fan or ’90s rock fan. All tracks are great, especially the opening track “Ginger.” Only the final track, “Evel Knievel” is a throw-away, being a 4-minute experimental noise track. Not their most original release, but my favorite. Listen to “Ginger.” It’s noise pop perfection.
