Autoamerican is Blondie‘s most accomplished album. The amount of varying styles on this album is simply staggering considering they’re a pop band.
Whether it’s the lounge pop of “Here’s Looking at You,” or the jazz crooning of “Faces,” Autoamerican is a consistently exciting and unpredictable listen. The hit songs such as the reggae-tinged “The Tide Is High,” and “Rapture,” one of the first majorly successful rap songs, also shouldn’t go without mention. Much more than these styles are portrayed on Autoamerican, but all of this would mean nothing if the band didn’t tackle these new directions well, and they most certainly do. Debbie Harry‘s voice is as alluring as ever and the rest of the band craft memorable melodies and catchy beats that will be stuck in the listener’s head even after the album is over.
Some may prefer the direct pop assault of Parallel Lines, but Autoamerican showcases the extent of Blondie’s talent that had yet to be fully realized until they showed everything they could do on this album. Highly recommended to those with an open mind.
