The youthful energy pervading much of Sonic Youth’s music spoke a lot to me in my early adulthood. Detached, rebellious, and a yearning to express some kind of stronger emotion that you’re not yet quite sure of. The noise sections have a reckless abandonment to them, but also seem calculated, fitting in with the songs perfectly in a pop format, even though the music itself is as possibly inaccessible as pop can be. Daydream Nation is the perfect soundtrack to a teenager’s hot summers in the suburbs.
Sonic Youth took quite a long time to grow on me, but I’m glad they did. The amount of time it took me to connect to their music was long, but the enjoyment I get out of Sonic Youth and Daydream Nation now will last forever.
