Better Than Ezra’s Deluxe sounds like a poor man’s R.E.M. Jangle pop, country/Americana tinges, and even the vocalist sounds like he’s trying to sing like Michael Stipe at times. Not enough strong hooks here to be a great pop rock album. I don’t even think “Good” stands out, personally, and that was Better Than Ezra’s biggest song. Deluxe on a whole is pretty pleasant with the soft, tuneful vocals, but there’s rarely anything interesting going on underneath them. Totally unnoticeable, easy-listening rock. Anyone who compares Better Than Ezra to Gin Blossoms at their best is out of their mind, in my opinion.
