“Rebel Rebel” is so much better than every other song on this album that it’s ridiculous. Everything else is average glam rock. Average by the Bowie standard, of course. With Diamond Dogs, David Bowie has dragged the glam phase of his career out a bit too long and sees him start to run dry. The mixing in the production is terrible, everything is pushed to the front in this overly-detailed chaotic mess and there’s nothing to grab onto in most of these songs.

Diamond Dogs isn’t a bad listen, but only one fantastic song is kind of a letdown for him at this point in his career. Again though, “Rebel Rebel” is an absolute killer. One of the greatest guitar riffs of all time. The metronome kept by the beat settles into this perfectly reliable second-hand tick-tick-tick and the glistening silvery chords of the lead guitar slop and drip over each other with each note in this thicker minute-hand movement and the flow is just so delicious and perfectly in sync.
