Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star is one of the only Sonic Youth albums I just cannot get into. There’s not even one song here I think is a killer and encourages returning to search out other highlights. I’ve listened to it more than once, but every time, I feel the album is overly bloated, lifeless, and lacking good melodies—or even the interesting song structures SY almost always deliver. Oh, and I’m normally pretty cool with lo-fi music, but here, the sound quality is the equivalent of a nail being dragged across a chalkboard.
Uh, nice things? “Sweet Shine” is probably the best song on here. There are a few others that are half-decent. Half. Sonic Youth are one of my all-time favorite bands, and I have found something to like about all their studio albums other than this one. However, because of that, I’m inclined to give this more tries in the future. Hopefully, it’ll click for me one day. After all, when I first heard Sonic Youth, I didn’t like anything by them. Now, I love ’em.
