The Cardigans – “First Band on the Moon”

The Cardigans have an impeccable style inspired by ’50s lounge pop, but the incredible singles from ‘First Band on the Moon’ land every other song on the dark side of the moon.

Apparently, I downloaded the entire discography of The Cardigans some time ago. What the hell? I don’t remember ever doing that. Oh, well. I’m happy I did, as First Band on the Moon assures me.

The Cardigans do a modern, alternative update of ’50s lounge pop featuring the sugary-sweet vocals of Nina Persson. The Cardigans are one of those pop bands whose lesser songs are saved by a fantastic vocalist, such as Blondie.

The problem with The Cardigans is that they’ve never delivered an album full of killer tracks. Unfortunately, that applies to First Band on the Moon, as well. “Lovefool” is one of the most incredible pop songs of all time, but nothing here can compete in the slightest. Too bad. I still dig the general style, however. Let’s just say you wouldn’t be missing much by picking up a Greatest Hits compilation by the band.
