Another Slowdive release. Same tone and ideas, different sound. Like the cover suggests, the feedback washes over you like a solar wave. Very slow (always for Slowdive) and powerful (not always). My only gripe with this EP is that the songs are too consistent in structure. On the band’s last EP, Morningrise, songs would change as they went along while maintaining the same tone/emotion. Here it’s all the same shit. But it’s a good sound and only 14 minutes, so they get away with it. As usual, the tribal drumming of Neil Carter goes unappreciated. Though the band got better at writing songs after his departure, they lost the most interesting aspect of their sound. For an example of what I mean, listen to Albatross, which is definitely the highlight of this EP and shows how transcendent great shoegaze can be.
The band’s female vocalist, Rachel Goswell, handles the entire EP with the exception of Albatross which is male vocalist Neil Halstead with Goswell on backing vocals.
