“She’s So High” and “Wear Me Down” are pretty good songs, but the rest of Leisure is mostly just serviceable Baggy-Madchester rock. The band tries to cover up a lack of hooks and good melodies with a lot of minor noisy psychedelic guitar wash. Sometimes it works and makes for a pleasant shoegaze-ish song, such as with “Sing,” but most of the time it’s just uninteresting. Too amateurish and lacking in ideas to get away with being 50 minutes too. 40 would have been fine with the lesser tracks being B-sides or just plain not existing at all because a lot of these songs are unmemorable or made irrelevant by better songs on the same album doing the same thing.
Despite this, it’s pretty all right. The band already has their personality thanks to Damon Albarn’s signature vocals, and you can tell just by listening to this that the band would go nowhere but up with later releases, which they certainly did. Don’t skip Leisure just because you’re already a fan—you’ll find enough to like.
