“Modern Love” and “China Girl” are fantastic pop songs and what make Let’s Dance so frustrating. It’s clear David Bowie‘s songwriting skills haven’t dried up yet with those two tracks, so you get the impression that he isn’t even trying with the rest of the songs on here.
Most likely because he probably isn’t. David Bowie played no instruments on this album other than his lead vocals. The success of the singles on Let’s Dance allowed him to become a celebrity again for a short time period, but time hasn’t been kind to this album and it stands as a fairly mediocre album overall. At the very least, every song on here is certainly listenable, and a hardcore fan might even really like a few of them.
