Evidently, every time I come back to Low by David Bowie, I’m a little less impressed. It’s a condensed, lightened version of textures that were already thoroughly explored in the Berlin School movement. I don’t see the point. When he pulls the reigns in a bit more and develops a sort of ambient pop sound it’s something, but that’s not generally well-established here. One of his most perplexingly acclaimed albums. Low is bizarre for Bowie, to be certain, but it’s not bizarre music on a broader scale. In my opinion, ambient Bowie has never proven to be his forte in any of his attempts. This isn’t especially “experimental,” and it’s probably not among his most important contributions to music.
