Metamatic is Gary Numan without a background in glam/post-punk music. So, a lot less annoying and likewise more respectable. John Foxx doesn’t come off as a weird idiot, and the rhythm in his vocals is actually a bit menacing. He’s clearly still inspired by dated ’70s sci-fi (just look at the song titles… “He’s a Liquid,” though that’s still one of the highlights here). Though sci-fi inspired, this is inspired by early sci-fi horror. I find that a lot more interesting. A product of its time that can be off-putting to some (including myself), but less off-putting than a lot of early electronic music. The synths are a bit creepier than Numan’s and his ilk, as well. What I’m saying is, for this style of music, Metamatic is my go-to album.
