More Slowdive, yum. That’s cuz they’re as sweet and sugary as shoegaze gets. I would eat a Slowdive.
This sounds closer to Souvlaki than their self-titled debut EP before it and some of the stuff to follow after for a while. Funny. I like it a lot, one of my favorite Slowdive releases. She Calls is one of my favorite songs. The backing vocals from Rachel Goswell as she says the song’s title repeatedly give me the happiest chills. And then the song kind of erupts and falls apart in the latter half and is just as good while being different.
This is the beginning of Slowdive using more interesting sounds to create their beautiful soundscapes, a trait of theirs that’s proof of them being one of the best shoegaze bands there’s ever been. Taking the thumping tribal ambiance of Losing Today for example. That drum beat is something else. The slow, sparkling chords that open the song are wonderful too and sound like no other chords on this album. Slowdive have a lot more variety in their sound than a lot of people give them credit for. But they certainly don’t have tempo variety! Like almost every other Slowdive release, this is as slow as molasses. That’s kind of the point, waves slowly coming up to the shore in a perfect, natural rhythm. It’s in their name. But that doesn’t mean they have to march to that beat every single time, you know.
Pick this up, shoegaze, rock, and Slowdive fans.
