I love Dear Science for taking post-punk the closest to the dance floor it’s ever been, as well as just being a great update of R&B-inspired rock, but that’s not enough for me to call myself a TV on the Radio fan. Return to Cookie Mountain didn’t impress me much, so I tested my loyalty by going on to Nine Types of Light, hoping it’d sound more like its predecessor. The R&B and funk elements are still there, but they’ve decidedly slowed down, apparently exhausted from their last rave.
Nine Types of Light just kind of coasts by, and I’ve got better music to chill out to in every scenario. It’s too pleasant to hate, especially when I’m vaguely reminded of better music, ironically. “Will Do” sounds curiously like the Third Eye Blind Song “How’s It Going to Be.” It’s also the best song. Coincidence? I think not. Get Third Eye Blind instead. Best TV on the Radio album.
