Pointless Walks to Dismal Places is an interesting blend of ’80s C86 indie rock and post-punk with dashes of ’90s post-hardcore and noise rock. Throw in some other early ’90s indie signifiers like shoegaze and the sometimes twee-esque vocals of Linda Steelyard, and you have a true smorgasbord of underground rock at the time.
Mick Derrick is the more prominent vocalist, however, with a rough ‘n tumblin’ Irish accent that’s so strong and stereotypical that it sounds like something you’d see in a cartoon. I don’t know what Derrick actually looks like, but I can’t help but imagine him with red hair and freckles. For the record, I like the Pogues, and My Bloody Valentine is my favorite band, so I’ve got nothing against the Irish, okay?
This album isn’t an underrated gem, in my opinion, but it’s close, and I’d definitely recommend it to others. “Doorstop Rhythmic Bloc” is my highlight. Admittedly, it’s a bit of an outlier on this album, being closer to early ’90s indie pop than any other track.
And don’t name your band “Prolapse.”
