Sonic Youth reached their peak when they learned how to work their experimental tendencies into the context of a good pop rock song. On Rather Ripped, the band hold back their noise outbursts and deliver 12 tight songs with pleasant, subdued melodies.

This ends up working pretty well and creates several very listenable songs and only a few great ones. Rather Ripped has a hazy feel to it that makes it an ideal album to relax to while still having enough energy to not fully lull you to sleep. “Reena,” “Incinerate,” “Rats,” and “Turquoise Boy” are highlights, but every song manages to at least be agreeable. Sonic Youth may or may not be past their prime, but they sure haven’t run out their songwriting talents.
