Refused’s debut, self-titled EP shows little of their experimentation that would lead the band to widespread recognition. Refused is structurally traditional hardcore punk, but the catchiness of every single song shows that Refused probably spent a lot of time developing them. The guitar, as always, straddles the line between hardcore and metalcore, and the bass lines, when you’re able to hear them, are genius. A lot of hardcore bands don’t care about writing great bass lines (though to be fair, on most of this EP, neither do Refused).
“Re-fused” is the definite highlight. The chorus has an unusually dark tone and doesn’t sound like something you’d normally hear in hardcore punk. This also contains the definitive version of “Back in Black,” obviously.
