The first disc of Selected Ambient Works Volume II is fantastic, but after that, it loses consistency, and it becomes clear that Aphex Twin bit off more than he could chew. There’s just not enough variety to keep this interesting, and at nearly three hours, it could have set the same moods just as well by being shorter. I felt that the album repeated itself a lot tonally and didn’t feel enough like a trip through various soundscapes, like I assume was intended. Despite some highlights through the whole thing, this album lacked any really transcendental moments for me. That is to say, Selected Ambient Works Volume II didn’t really affect me on any major level despite being very pleasant.
