Worth a spin. Sinking is one of those albums definitely in need of editing. Check out those song lengths. I can tell you right now few of them are justified, and a lot of repetitiveness should have been cut to make this a more digestible listen. Right now it’s 72-minutes long. There’s self-indulgence, and then there’s just being rude to your listener, ya know? Kind of sounds like some socially-aware fellas stuck all the coolest, most popular electronic music trends in a blender. There’s some breakbeat here too like on the instrumental “Space Dust.”
Basically, I will listen to any electronic album with a blue cover in hopes it sounds cool and or aquatic. This fills both criteria which is great but it still needs to have good songs. It does. “One Night Stand” is a particular favorite with the twinkling synthesizers and the submerged beats and vocals. The best thing about this album is that it sounds like you’re going deeper and deeper underwater as it progresses. “Losing It” is my favorite and especially dark.
Speaking of vocals, the vocalist sounds like Horace Andy, one of Massive Attack’s vocalists. As a huge Massive Attack fan, it makes me feel right at home.
A consistent album for those dedicated to the sound. For the unconverted, stick to the trip-hop classics first.
