Musicians rarely have attempted releases even larger than a double album. Rarer still is when it’s the best move in their career. Enter Stevie Wonder’s "Songs in the Key of Life".

Hot damn. Who would have ever thought that a triple album would be the one of the best-flowing albums I have ever heard? I’m going to go out on a limb and say Songs in the Key of Life is certainly the most cohesive double/triple album ever made. Furthermore, it’s one of the best ever written.

This is the best kind of triple album—one that has a reason to be. A lot of bands make doubles and triples for the fuck of it, not because they have a statement that’s too big for a single album to contain. Not Stevie Wonder. Mr. Wonder stretches the boundaries of soul as if he’s the world’s most flexible preacher and delivers smash after smash, hit after hit, just wave after wave of beautiful, soft-cushioned soul while his keyboards rain over you like a great revelation, the feeling of finally being free. Songs in the Key of Life is the sound of a man shedding his chains. Why don’t you join him?
