‘Soon Over Babaluma’ is a pleasant album. All the best Can albums are pleasant. But this is a more ordinary kind of pleasant. It doesn’t reach a spiritual level.

Soon Over Babaluma Review

I don’t think Soon Over Babaluma comes close to their previous albums at all. I still have to give Can credit here. In 1974, synthesizers were still very novel and a lot of artists treated them as a cute toy with no great compositional grasp of it.

Here, synthesizers meld with the guitar perfectly, as if in a partnership and not competing for being the star attraction. They rival Manuel Göttsching when it comes to elegant use of electronics, though that may not be a fair comparison since Göttsching was often only imitating electronics with his unique guitar tone.

Soon Over Babaluma is pleasant, like the best Can albums. But this is a more ordinary kind of pleasant. It doesn’t reach a spiritual level.
