Early My Bloody Valentine’s cheeky noise pop has its appeal. Every track on Sunny Sundae Smile has a nice undercurrent of guitar distortion hinting at the band’s future shoegaze works.
Only four-tracks long and clocking in at under 10 minutes, this is an excellent release despite not being a good representation of the sound My Bloody Valentine is commonly known for. Dave Conway performs his final vocal duties for the band on this release, and they’re his best yet. His high-pitched delivery and the upbeat guitars give this EP a twee-like quality.
Despite the EP’s simplicity, the lyrics give it a certain intrigue. For all the happy-go-lucky upbeat guitar riffs, many are sure to turn heads upon realizing the true nature of some of the songs. The necrophiliac undertones of “Paint a Rainbow,” or surreal imagery of “Sylvie’s Head” turning lobster red and growing legs. And the title track’s colorful guitar work innocently hides its longing sexual lyrics about… facial shots.
While it may seem minimalist at a first glance, this EP’s catchy hooks and amusing lyrics will keep many easily entertained in its 8:58 minute span.
