If there’s ever been an album that highlights every negative facet of ’80s production standards, The Doctor is it. Hollow synthesizers, excessive reverb, and gratingly loud music are only the mud on this dirt cake, as the songs underneath all the horrible gloss aren’t any good either, commonly lacking the memorable riffs or perverse fun that Cheap Trick are known for.
“It’s Up to You” and “Are You Lonely Tonight” had the potential to be decent songs but are ruined by the production. Even hardcore fans of Cheap Trick should skip The Doctor or at least take solace that it’s certainly their worst effort.
