Through the Looking Glass is one of the best albums by Siouxsie & The Banshees. Yeah, it’s a covers album, and those are often mediocre as hell, but this is the exact opposite. These covers are phenomenal and integrate perfectly into the Banshees’s distinctive style, yet there’s still a lot of structural variety on the album due to each song coming from a different composer. Stunning atmospheres all over this album.
Besides the fact that it being a covers album kind of cheapens it a bit, there’s only one other major problem: the awful drum sound. The production for the percussion on this album is dreadful (and I have the original CD pressing). It’s mixed far too loud, and the thick, earthly sound of it clashes with the rest of the album’s soft textures. Imagine it like this: you’re rolling around in a large, lush, comfortable blanket, and every second, someone repeatedly shoves a big, dull wooden stick through the blanket and you bump into it. Sounds annoying and painful, right? It is.
