Tremolo by My Bloody Valentine (MBV) is the precursor EP to Loveless, and it shows. “To Here Knows When” is the lead track here and is well-known due to its inclusion on Loveless, though this version features a different instrumental coda from that release, so I recommend keeping both.

Otherwise, the sexual and sensual tone Loveless is known for is present in full force, though the latter-three tracks are more melodic than heavy. Think more “Blown a Wish” than “Only Shallow,” to use more Loveless comparisons.

Regarding this EP’s exclusive tracks, “Swallow” and “Honey Power” rank among MBV’s best works and feature Bilinda Butcher on vocals. “Moon Song” is another solid tune in its own right, with Kevin Shields delivering a hypnotic vocal mantra. There seems to be some influence from Indian music on Tremolo, primarily in its rhythmic drum patterns. This is most noticeable on “Swallow” and “Moon Song.” Tremolo is a wonderful release to explore after being introduced to Loveless. Having a fraction of that album’s qualities guarantee Tremolo is one of the best EPs in music history.
