Madonna’s weakest ’80s synth pop album. Too heavy on slower, low-to-midtempo ballad material. Madonna’s greatest hooks were merciless and could make you shake effortlessly. However, some of these smoother keyboard melodies can get a bit atmospheric at times, such as in “Live to Tell,” which gives True Blue its own, unique identity. Along with this territory comes more introspective lyrics, which is nice to hear from Madonna who would become more focused on pleasure and partying as her career progressed.
But those aspects still aren’t prevalent enough to make True Blue stand out amongst her other albums. The non-single, more upbeat pop songs pale in comparison to ones on previous albums. The album cover and title are spot-on, at least. “La Isla Bonita” sums it all up as the best slow song on this album, and I’m sure everyone recognizes it.
