Maybe you’ll consider me more braindead than any creature seen in this movie, because I can’t for the life of me see why anyone still finds entertainment value in Night of the Living Dead. On a measly budget of $100,000 George A. Romero cleverly disguises his lack of funding with craft and great ambition. Too bad he couldn’t afford a better screenplay. This is an absolute bore. Romero sets the tension extremely poorly with the creatures outside of the house having no presence whatsoever (ambient sound, anyone?), and the human drama inside of the abode is so thin that even when it boils, very little spills over. Obviously, the acting is awful too—the living characters are better at appearing dead than the actual zombies. Money was the least of this film’s issues. I yearn for a world where no one proclaims this is superior to Day of the Dead.
