A solid album by The Byrds, but I’d have to say this one is only for fans. There are a couple of great songs on here, but an equal or greater amount of material are merely decent or good. The Byrds started to write more of their own material on Turn! Turn! Turn!, but they still had some experience to gain before they became consistently great songwriters. Turn! Turn! Turn!, like Mr. Tambourine Man before it, relies a lot on strong cover songs. But they are still “just” cover songs.
A point of note is that you can see the first tinges of country rock finding its way into The Byrds’s material; something that would only become stronger with successive albums and would shock fans when the band made a sudden, complete transition to a country band.
