Post-hardcore is pretty much a dead genre now, but there are some bands that keep the torch burning. One of those bands is Glassjaw, who have been playing since around the genre’s conception and still occasionally release new material. Another one of those bands is a much more recently formed one named letlive., a band that certainly wears their Glassjaw influence on their shoulder.
Fake History is without a doubt their magnum opus and deserves to be ranked up next to any of Glassjaw’s best, or hell, several of the greatest post-hardcore albums. I’m normally not into post-hardcore that isn’t progressive, that is to say the more “experimental” post-hardcore that mixes in other music styles and other things to keep the music interesting. Relationship of Command by At the Drive-In and The Shape of Punk to Come by Refused are two great examples.
Fake History has excellent musicianship and without a doubt the person who stands out the most is the band’s vocalist, Jason Butler. His range is incredible, and he has a perfect tone. That sometimes works against the album though, because I personally like my rock music with gruffer vocals, and Jason’s voice is as smooth as you’ll ever hear in this kind of music.
The standout track for me here is “Muther,” where Jason is joined by an excellent female backing vocalist. If you are at all into post-hardcore, you owe it to yourself to listen to Fake History. Unfortunately, I consider the band’s other releases to be dispensable. But at the very least, Fake History remains.
