In some ways, Le premier bonheur du jour is a bit better than Françoise Hardy’s debut a year prior. The production values in particular are much improved and the album no longer sounds like it was recorded in a tin can. Hardy’s vocals have more force and confidence behind them—she’s a true star here. The percussion mediocre, with the drums often having a marching band sound to them, and it’s repetitive in addition to naturally being kind of lame. Coolest moments are the R&B organ playing in “Comme tant d’autres,” and again with its jazzy noir styling on “L’amour ne dure pas toujours.” The percussion and overly frequent string arrangements can be overbearing and too similar, but this album is worth a listen for fans.
