Disc one of March to Fuzz contains a lot of Mudhoney’s fan-favorite songs. For the most part, it’s pretty comprehensive, though there are plenty of fantastic tracks missing, primarily from Superfuzz Bigmuff Plus Early Singles, Mudhoney (self-titled album), and Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge. The compilation spans their first five albums up to Tomorrow Hit Today, which is generally the high point of their career. This is a good overview of the band, just be aware there are plenty of songs just as good on the band’s studio albums, if not better, than the ones chosen for this compilation.
Disc two is a bunch of rare unreleased tracks and B-sides. Most of these tracks are short and dispensable, full of Mudhoney’s trademark punk aggression. They’re worth checking out for diehard completionists, but there’s no hidden gems. Fun, but mostly inessential.
Bottom line: if you’re looking for an introduction to Mudhoney, March to Fuzz is possibly your best value considering the quality and amount of material. However, getting one of their first two albums or the Superfuzz Bigmuff Plus Early Singles compilation would suffice just as well. If you’re already converted and interested in the second disc, it’s worth a look, but by the same coin, you’re not missing much by skipping it.
