Nirvana – “In Utero”
Do people overstate the abrasiveness of ‘In Utero’ to distance themselves from the radio-friendly ‘Nevermind?’ (read more)

Nirvana Retrospective
It’s not easy making people who aren’t Nirvana fans understand. In fact, I’m inclined to say it’s downright impossible. You have to hear them at just the right time, at just the right moment in life to feel what they’re trying to say in their music. For a comparison, it’s like The Catcher in the… (read more)

Alice in Chains – “The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here”
‘The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here’ gets repetitive quickly. Only a hardcore fan wouldn’t be tired by the middle of this 70-minute (!) album. (read more)

Nirvana – “Nevermind” (1991)
Nevermind‘s praise is definitely deserved, as it contains some of the greatest pop/rock songwriting ever put to record. Any song here could be a single (except for the possible exception of the mellower “Polly”). Even better, the songs are backed by the authentic and relatable emotions of the depressed and alienated frontman and songwriter, Kurt… (read more)

Mudhoney – “March to Fuzz” (2000)
Disc one of March to Fuzz contains a lot of Mudhoney’s fan-favorite songs. For the most part, it’s pretty comprehensive, though there are plenty of fantastic tracks missing, primarily from Superfuzz Bigmuff Plus Early Singles, Mudhoney (self-titled album), and Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge. The compilation spans their first five albums up to Tomorrow Hit… (read more)

Mad Season – “Above” (1995)
My most recent listens to Above revealed it to be better than I remembered. Mad Season have given us one of the, say, five or so supergroup albums that’s actually worth multiple spins. On the other hand, the mid-album material is emblematic of the band’s lack of experience playing together, and seemingly the time spent… (read more)

Alice in Chains – “Facelift”
‘Facelift’ never digs itself too deep like ‘Dirt’ is capable of, and it’s at least a less exhausting listen because of it. ‘Facelift’ brings you up; ‘Dirt’ brings you down. And some days, I’d rather be up. (read more)

Nirvana – “Bleach” (1989)
The sound of a band that hasn’t yet sharpened their strengths and reached their full potential, Bleach is Nirvana’s most “grunge” album; the influence of sludge metal and garage punk that defined the genre are very evident in this debut album. The band’s guitars are turned very low, making the riffs sound thick and lurching.… (read more)

Nirvana – “Incesticide” (1992)
Incesticide is the Nirvana album I tend to listen to the most these days, since I’m not overly familiar with it and it has the most variety out of any of their albums for obvious reasons. As a fan, I wouldn’t throw away any of the songs here, but at the same time there’s a… (read more)

Nirvana – “With the Lights Out” (2004)
With Kurt Cobain having tragically passed away, Courtney Love continues to cherish his memory by building and spending the fortune he amassed for his work. With the Lights Out is a posthumous release compiling a bunch of rare and/or unreleased Nirvana tracks. The bulk of these are made up of live recordings and demos of… (read more)
