Brilliant approach: just bash your guitar on the wall until you hear a new sound instead of reaching it naturally. I can’t respect The Parable of Arable Land at all. Tunelessly playing your instruments at random as if one gave a five year-old an electric guitar they’ve never picked up before is a result obvious enough to not need an album dedicated to it. It takes ingenuity to reform chaos into something both deceptively constructed while still challenging. I don’t see anything to dissect in these free improvisations. They are what they are: mindlessly boring. Captain Beefheart, this is not.
However, the songs other than the “Free Form Freak-Outs” are fairly decent and interesting. Vocalist Mayo Thompson provides context to the proto-post-punk cacophony. It doesn’t fully work, but an artistic vision can be heard at least trying to escape from the racket instead of just flailing its arms about in-place.
